![]() ![]() I'm not a veteran of Angband so I cannot explain the classes and monsters differences compare to frogcomposband but I think they plays exactly the same.Whether it's ADOM, IVAN or (arguably) Dwarf Fortress, let's talk about it! I know, this is not conventional for a RL, but I still lose my 'spot' in my exploration and need to go back. That helps to experiments and go deeper in the game without paying the price of permanent. To learn the game, I activate the cheat to not kill my character. There is also the option to 'remember' the level you entered via the stair. Each city its it's own shops (and new list of items) and quests to pick! The quest are basic go kill that monster, but it works for me in the context of dungeon crawling. It's frogcomposband, another Angband variant, and I got hook because it has quests with a specific level, it gives you a nice reward (magic or powerful item that fits your level), the dungeons are scattered on a huge world map and who know what level the dungeons are. My hitch to play RL started last week, and I tried to play a new variant that I didn't play. When I tried Angband, it didn't work for me because it lacked the direction or quest oriented of Brogue or Sil-Q that I enjoyed. I tried CoQ, but the sci-fi world did not work for me. They are easy to get into and the options are quite limited compare to Angband. I also tried RL like Brogue, and Sil-Q and they are among my favorites. I have the same interest as you in Angband but I would add its variants: explore the expansiveness of the game! I wanted to find out what are the major difference (quality of live, good use of ANSI graphic, interesting dungeons layout). Angband is more learning towards a particular set of challenges that have predictable ways to overcome them before moving forwards. That's why a lot of players hate it, especially those from the roguelikes where it's use what you find and do the best you can. Everything you want eventually comes to you with enough farming. Farm to get particular items that help you survive. Farm to cover your permanent resistances. You have to farm potions to max your stats. And if you have bad RNG, keep playing at the same depth until you get stronger. It's you vs the game, rather than you vs the RNG. You see a vault, you know it's full of dangerous monsters and traps but also valuable loot. You see a unique, you know how to handle them or run. The game won't really throw anything completely foreign to you like Qud or Brogue will. You pick your favorite race/class combo and then play it to perfection. Eventually you can learn all of the surprises and be prepared for anything. So I like Angband because it's all about seeing how far you can get with predictable strategy. There's why there's a discussion about whether worm farming is good or bad, because it's boring but effective. What it does to well is tactical gameplay, where you have to use all the skills at your disposal to survive. There's no weird builds to try, or weird challenges to overcome. ![]() Unfortunately Angband isn't as interesting as the other games.
